Hurricane Harvey: Indian student dies in US

A 24-year-old Indian student has died after he nearly drowned in a swollen lake in the US state of Texas where Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc. Nikhil Bhatia, a student at the Texas A&M University, was rescued from the Lake Bryan, where he along with another Indian girl Shalini Singh had gone swimming, on Saturday. Bhatia succumbed to his injuries today while Singh continues to be in a critical condition, according to the Consulate officials, who were in regular touch with the family members in hospital and in India. Bhatia, originally from Jaipur, along with his friend Singh, 25, from New Delhi, was pursuing Master in Public health were both brought to the local hospital in a critical condition.


CM Yogi Adityanath, his two deputies to contest MLC bypoll in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and two Deputy Chief Ministers – Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma – will contest the forthcoming bypolls to the state legislative council, the BJP announced on Wednesday. The BJP said that Adityanath will fight the MLC bypolls along with his four ministerial colleagues. The two other ministers who are Swantatra Dev Singh and Mohsin Raza.  Like his predecessors Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati, Adityanath will also become a member of the state Legislative Council.  Adityanath, who was sworn in as Chief Minister of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh on March 19, is a member of the Lok Sabha from Gorakhpur. Maurya, who is Deputy Chief Minister, is a Lok Sabha member from Phoolpur.


Vijay Narayan is TN’s new Advocate General

Senior advocate Vijay Narayan was today appointed Tamil Nadu’s Advocate General following the resignation of R Muthukumaraswamy. The appointment was made by the state government after Muthukumaraswamy tendered his resignation yesterday, citing personal reasons. Narayan is presently president of Madras Bar Association, the oldest association of lawyers in the country. Narayan comes from a family of lawyers. His grandfather was the legendary M K Nambyar, who was responsible to a great extent for the development of constitutional law in India, while his uncle is K K Venugopal is Attorney General of India.


Pakistan violates ceasefire in Rajouri, Army retaliates

Pakistan on Wednesday resorted to ceasefire violation on the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowshera sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. Indian army is retaliating to this violation, reported news agency ANI. No damage or casualty has been reported. The Indian and Pakistani Army, at around 10:30 am, traded heavy fire on Wednesday. The Pakistani Army targeted Indian positions on the LoC in the Nowshera sector, Defence Ministry spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Manish Mehta told IANS here.


Navy opens community kitchens, food counters in Mumbai

The Navy has opened community kitchens and food counters at various locations in the megapolis to provide relief to commuters stranded in torrential rainfall. “Community kitchens providing food opened at Churchgate, Byculla, Parel, CST, Worli and Tardeo, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Mankhurd, Chembur, Malad and Ghatkopar,” a Navy spokesperson said. “Food counters opened at various locations in Mumbai for stranded commuters,” the spokesperson tweeted. “Indian Navy for you…Anytime Anywhere Everytime,” he added. The Western Naval Command has made arrangements to provide shelter to Mumbaikars who were left stranded after heavy rains lashed the metropolis yesterday.
